Increase Your Speed of Learning Music by Using an App

Posted by in Articles By Rebecca, Review Posts, Teachers | 0 comments

Can music education apps really increase the speed of learning?

The answer to this is a most definite yes.

Researching, testing, and observing students who use apps to enhance their skills as learning musicians are rising, and seem to be extremely enthusiastic about it.

It has been noted that the musical skills being repeated on a device equipped with a music education app are quickly learned and deposited into short term memory.    The student then continues to “play” the app for a longer amount of time since the presentation is often quirky or fun.

Musical Me! - by Duck Duck Moose - Duck Duck Moose
Educational Value: Very Good

3 and 1/2 notes

Price: $1.99

Age Recommended: 0-4 years old

Skills Developed:  Music Enthusiasm and Appreciation, Memory, Written Music familiarity.

App Tested on iPad/iPhone

Good Stuff about this app: If you have small children you will enjoy this music ed. app.  It’s a great past time for young kids.  Memory, Rhythm, Movement, Instruments, and Notes are among some of the components included.

Note that it is for the very young.

There are different pages within this app that you navigate through with the single touch of a cute, hovering mouse.  He takes you to the different parts within the app where you can explore music while listening to a happy lady sing folk songs to you.  It’s very cheery!

I found a video from the makers.  I thought you might like to look and see if this app suits your family.

Our wish list:  While this app is very cute, I don’t really see any teaching going on.  It’s mostly exploration.   The repeat the pitch page is probably the most education and works on memory with pitch and site recognition.

I searched and searched for something within this app that actually tells the kids how to play the songs to the beat.  It just doesn’t.  The birds fly by, you touch them and they each play a pitch to the song the app aims for you to play.  But, unless you tap in the correct rhythm it doesn’t sound much like the song at all.  There is no feedback, only just a bongo playing in the background.  Maybe there needs to be some direction here?

For the non-teaching reasons, I kept this app at more of an exploration game for children between the ages of 0 and 4.

My Love: I love the outer-space page where memory, site, and pitch are explored.  Do Re Mi are sung and the planets light up with super happy faces.  Your job is to tap the correct ones in the order they were first presented.  You either get an “oops” or a “you did it!”   Feedback is super important when a skill is trying to  be learned.

The little girls I tested it with spent the most time on this page.

Summary:  All-in-all we think this app is pretty darn cute for the youngins.  Small children will love to spend loads of time exploring each page within.  Oh, and making the cow jump over the moon is pretty fun!

iOS Apps for Music Education

Posted by in Articles By Rebecca, Teachers | 0 comments

The best of music education is here!  I am thrilled to see so many developers working on true music education apps for iOS devices.

It is an honor to be in the front of the app world watching 21st century education unfold.

I have always been a serial-learner and a go-getter both.  With how simple it is to get my hands on otherwise impossible to find education, I feel exhilarated to say the least.

I watch the light bulbs go on quicker and quicker in my students and children.  It’s almost sad that we didn’t have this kind of technology a few years ago.  We have no excuse not to learn anything we desire.

Educational Value: Excellent

3 and 1/2 notes

Price: $0.99

Age Recommended: All Ages

Skills Developed:  Treble and Bass Clef Note Reading in either ABCDEFG or do re mi

App Tested on iPad

Good Stuff about this app:  If you are not into all the “fluff” with music education apps, then this is the app for you.  It gets right to the point.  Do you know your notes or not?

Players are asked to tap the proper spot on the staff (in either treble or bass clef) to show they know where the note is.  The notes then pop up in a bright golden ring and you get either a green check mark (meaning Correct) or a red X (meaning incorrect).

It’s very easy to use and a really great tool for learning those notes.

There is a little pop-up page you can use to help yourself remember the order of the notes using the old tips: FACE and Every Good Boy Does Fine, etc.

-OR- You can tap the page to change it all over to Solfege (do re mi).  This is super handy!

Music Ed App DoReMemory3

Music Ed App DoReMemory2

Music Ed App DoReMemory1

Our Wish List:  Maybe this app was intended only for piano students, but it is confusing for students of other instruments to figure out what notes “High G”, etc are.  There are no octaves designated here so the word “High” or “Low” could mean anything to different instrumentalists.  I wonder how this could be better accommodated?  Think Think..

My Love:  I love how easy it is to use.  I can hand my iPad to a student who is on the waiting bench and they can get through about 100 notes or more in just the couple of minutes they have to wait for their lesson to begin.  It’s a super no-nonsense tool for getting those notes down.

*Hint for music teachers: I always keep a pair of earphones with my device so the students can practice in private while they wait.

Summary:  All-in-all we think this app is very sensible and to the point.  I know of many workbooks trying to achieve the same skill of memorizing the notes on the staff who can’t do as good of a job as this app.  The student gets instant feedback, and you can plow through hundreds of notes in no time!  Worth every bit of its $0.99, if you ask me.

Chord Detector

This review is for:  Chord Detector

Chord Detector

Kid/Student Ratings: **** 4/5

 Teacher/Parent Ratings: *** 3/5

Educational Value: Excellent

3 and 1/2 notes

Price: $2.99

Age Recommended: All Ages of Guitar Players

Skills Developed:  A quick guide to the chords in selected tunes

App Tested on iPad

Good Stuff about this app:  My guitar playing/teaching son gave this one a test for a few days a couple of weeks ago.  This is what he said when he first opened the app:  “My life has just been changed forever.  This technology is incredible!”

And, incredible it is.  This app takes any selected tune (from your iTunes) and detects the chords that go along with the melody.  It then shows them to you in an “almost timely” manner with the fingerings and everything.  Really?  Yah.

Although musicians should understand that there are multiple chord ideas/shapes found within certain melodies, this app gives you a guide to go on.

If you are a musician/guitar player who has ever spent hours working out the chords to a favorite song, then your life will have changed a bit as well after using this app.  It’s like having your own personal guide to chord ideas within any melody.

Our Wish List:  Well as amazing as the technology is within this app, it’s just not really that accurate.  I’m not going to complain too much though because the you can avoid many brain cramps while working out the chords of certain tunes.

We tested it on tune after tune.  It was wrong on many of the chords used in complicated classical music, but pretty darn accurate for more simple bluegrass and blues.  It seems to be following the melody.  (even if a guitar is being played in the recording)

We will be watching the updates to see what improves because this idea is just really nifty.

My Love:  This app has a capo function on it!  Yeah!!  It has to be the very best feature here.  You can capo your guitar while using this function which helps you be able to use more familiar chord shapes.  Cool!

Summary:  All-in-all we really think the technology used in the making of this app is just the beginning of a bridge to new music education.  How much more simple life is becoming.  Good job developers!

How Music Lesson Studios Are Using iOS Devices to Enhance Learning

How Music Lesson Studios Are Using  iOS Devices to Enhance Learning
What do you think of a music teacher using the iPad to help educate your child during music lessons?
The evolution of learning styles is fascinating.  In ancient times, words were scratched into stone or metal.  We are now in a digital stage that is marking education as never seen before.
The speed, accessibility and ease of digital information has finally entered the music education world.  And, we are ready for it.
Children are wired for this new age and educators are smart to take advantage.  If you have been around a 5 year old in the past 6 months you no doubt have noticed that they can navigate an iPhone with greater speed than their 30-something  parent.
Here is a new approach for music educators that will increase the enthusiasm in his/her lessons studio ten-fold.

1.       Do your homework.  Get yourself an iPad and begin using it to find many of the wonderful education opportunities available.  You will both find it exciting and mind boggling.  It is worth the money.  I repeat: It is worth the $.

2.       Keep track of who has iOS devices in your studio.  It is not appropriate to ask a parent to purchase an iPad, but you’d be surprised at how many are inquisitive and take into consideration the purchase.  Many homes already have iPod touches.  These work as well as iPhones.

3.       Use the educational apps in your teaching studio as introduction to certain concepts.  These apps can be used in one-on-one lessons as well as in small group classes.  If you are a teacher in public school and have access to a smart-board then you are all set for large groups as well.

4.       Regularly assign the parents who own the appropriate devices (many do) to purchase the apps that will enhance their child’s learning.  The days of using interact-less worksheets are gone.

5.       Help the parent(s) be aware that you are focusing on solidifying a musical concept that can be enhanced and magnified by using the interactive tool you have suggested.

6.       Point out the cost comparison of the app in question to a workbook you could possibly use in exchange.  The parents will opt for the app every time.  And the child will be delighted.

7.       Use the apps for a carefully watched amount of time at the lesson.  It is easy to be excited about new apps that you find, but remember to be equally inspiring about many portions of the time they spend in your studio.

Your students will be thrilled to find that you have assigned them to “play” a game each day for part of their music practice time.  And you will find as much enjoyment out of the smooth transition your student makes into the next level.

Good Stuff about this app: This was one of the first apps I tested on some of my youngest students.  They really were enamored with this game.  The idea is that you watch and memorize a growing sequence of pitches being played.  Your job is to repeat what you hear and see.

What makes this different from a Simon Says game? It’s actually put in pitch order.  There are 5 colored shapes at the bottom of the screen that light up when a certain pitch is played.  The cute little firefly listens to you repeat it.  If you are correct the pitch is played again with

App Name: Music Maximus

Kid Tester Ratings: ***** 4/5

Teacher/Parent Ratings: ***** 5/5

4.5notes

Educational Value: Superior

Price: $0.99

Age Recommended: 1 and up

Skills Developed: music exploration, music appreciation, repetition skills, instrument identification, symphony orchestra introductions

App Tested on iPad/iPhone

Good Stuff about this app:  How charming!  This app is absolutely adorable.  Maximus the mouse guides you into a wonderful world of orchestral music (performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra).  In this app, there are several different areas to be explored including playing games with instruments such as a harp, xylophone, and piano.  This app really is very appropriate for several different ages.  I envision many parents using this as story time for their youngest ones (age 2-5).  I also can see how much value this app would have in a school environment when exploring orchestral music.  There are so many neat little tid-bits of information inside this app.  I even learned that Pandora’s Box wasn’t really a box at all!

This app is designed for opening a world of orchestral music through mini-games within.  There are board puzzles (with fabulous symphony orchestra music playing in the background), imitation game-play on different instruments, and more.  One of the fun little games within is “Maxi’s Dream”, where Maximus is riding on a mallet (for percussion).  He is dreaming of cheese and has to fly over the yellow cheese wedges.  If he accidentally gets the green cheese, it says he has a tummy ache.  The youngest ones really thought this was fun!

My wish list: Knowing that this game was made by real musicians, I expected all of the instrument sounds within this app to be real instruments.  That is not the case in the game of “Mystery Box” where you must listen to the instrument being played and then pick the correct one.  Honestly, the kids I tested this with couldn’t tell the difference between some of them since it only sounds like the octave is different (computer generated tones).  Hmmm… is this a possible future upgrade?  Because it would be a top of the list app if so.

My Love: The wonderful artwork in the app coincides with the picture books available by these same developers.  The fact that they have dedicated their musical careers towards children and symphony music education makes me stand and applaud!

Summary: All-in-all we think this app is precious and really very good.  Elementary Ed teachers would be in heaven if they could use this during their orchestra units.  I think it’s the perfect bed time story for young ones as well.  Speaking of stories, apparently Maximus has more books out all encouraging symphony orchestra skills and appreciation.

App Tested on my iPad

Good Stuff About This App: I have been a Suzuki Music Mom for 18 years, and let me tell you… this app makes getting all of that listening done easy.  Really.  I remember spending hours “dubbing” my kids’ song onto cassettes so I wouldn’t have to rewind Cuckoo over and over for my 4 year old.  Then came the “automatic rewind tape”.  I thought I was in heaven.  (giggle)  Then I moved into making play lists on my computer media player and burning disc after disc of Bach Minuets.  More recently came the iPod dock with auto repeat.  The only problem I still had was that every night I still had to go into his room after he fell asleep to turn the machine off.   …….enter “ZZZ”.

It’s my happy day!  I open this program

New Press Release: MetroTimer Metronome

Posted by in Media Channel | 0 comments

This is not a MusiciansWithApps Review. This is a new Press Release for MetroTimer (metronome).

ONYX Apps today announces MetroTimer 2.0 free for iOS, their Music app that provides the most accurate metronome function of any app in the App Store. Ideal for musicians at all levels of expertise, MetroTimer provides highly accurate audio and visual feedback, and it can be set to any number between 40 and 240 beats per minute. The app employs technology developed for their iKeepTime app, which measures a musician’s timekeeping abilities. A paid Pro version of the app adds complex rhythms.

Sofia, Bulgaria – ONYX Apps today is pleased to announce MetroTimer 2.0 free for iOS, their Music app that provides the most accurate metronome function of any app in the App Store. Ideal for musicians at all levels of expertise, regardless of instrument or style of music, MetroTimer provides highly accurate audio and visual feedback, and it can be set to any number between 40 and 240 beats per minute. The app employs technology developed for their iKeepTime app, which measures a musician’s timekeeping abilities. A paid Pro version of the app adds complex rhythms.

There are many useful approaches to developing greater musicianship, but metronome practice is among the most valuable. MetroTimer is a free app that has been measured to be more accurate than any other metronome app for iOS. Most app store metronomes are derived from Apple sample code included with the iOS SDK (Software Development Kit). And regretfully, this code fails to account for all the factors that can cause small inaccuracies to build up over time. MetroTimer, created by a software company that specializes in time measurement and regulation, is guaranteed to meet laboratory standards for accurate timekeeping.

The app includes four different voices, so users can hear the typical click or three other audible beat markers. The GUI includes a slider and large digital readout, as well as a plus button and a minus button to increment the setting by one BPM. An optional visual display flashes a red bar along with the metronome sound, and iPhone 4 owners can activate their camera light. Finally, the user can set a Practice Timer (1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 minutes), which will signal when the practice period is over.

MetroTimer Pro adds three features: 1) Interactive beat editor with custom accent placement; 2) Three different volume levels for beats, which allows complex rhythm patterns; and 3) Custom time signatures, odd, and compound meters. The upgrade is available as an in-app purchase.

Feature Highlights:
* Set metronome to any time between 40 and 240 BPM
* Tested with clock time regulation equipment
* Visual indication allows you to “see” the beat
* iPhone 4 LED flash visual feedback support
* MetroTimer Pro available as an in-app purchase

“Tempo is both literally and figuratively the heart of music,” observed Eugene Klein, CEO. “Mastering tempo is essential for good musicianship, and MetroTimer will help improve any player’s rhythm skills.”

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
* Requires iOS 4.0 or later
* 14.8 MB

Tester Ratings: ***** 5/5

Recommended Ages: ALL

Skills Developed: Steady Beat

App tested on: iPad/iPhone

Good stuff about this app: My very first app I downloaded to my iPad was this metronome.  I was super excited to join the new world and have my music gadgets on hand at all times.  This metronome delivered just what it promised.  I really like the subdivision feature and that it all looks like a regular metronome.  No confusion here.   Another really nifty feature is that when you touch the “tap” button at a regular interval, the metronome picks up on the tempo.  Nice for teachers finding a certain tempo for their students!  This metronome does so much more than my old battery-sucking one in the bottom of my music bag.  There are endless tones, abilities to save tempos under song names, and the volume is pretty good also.

My Wish List:  Um.  I can’t think of any.  It’s awesome for a metronome.  My young female students would love it if there was an option for showing it in pink.  :)
